************************** COPYRIGHT WARNING******************************************

If you use any images or data on this CD for any other reason than your own personal use, you must seek permission from their original source or you will infringe the copyright and incur the wrath of Tadayoshi. Data reproduction charges are minimal so please ask for details. Similarly it is illegal to make any copy of this CD except for your own personal use. The CD is not for multiple production of Gold Edition copies either. You can produce your own book only. Any more than this and you are infringing the copyright. Each CD has a different hidden code in the text, which identifies its owner. Should a copy book or CD turn up in someone else's possession, but with your book/CD number encoded, you will be breaking the copyright and again incur the wrath of Tadayoshi! I then get a free sword and an all expenses paid holiday to the Bahamas, and my lawyers get a new office. You have been warned.

***********************************CONTENTS*********************************************************

This read-me file on the CD-ROM is in seven main sections. Even if you are computer literate, you should read at least sections 1, 2, 3 & 7. The document is laid out as follows:

1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

2. CD-ROM LAYOUT & MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

3. GETTING STARTED FOR COMPUTER GEEKS

4. GETTING STARTED FOR DUMMIES

5. NAVIGATING THE BOOK

6. PRINTING

7. EDITING READ-ONLY FILES

********************* 1. BACKGROUND INFORMATION *******************************

First of all thank you for purchasing my book and/or CD-ROM. I hope it gives you many years of satisfaction. It may seem a little deep in some places, but with perseverance, I hope my hypotheses will make more sense and the temptation to ignore certain complicated sections of work will pass. Please take the time to fill out the registration sheet found in the 'register.doc' and also beginning on page 210. The actual form is on page 211.

One of my main reasons for producing the CD-ROM was that the Gold Edition book is not really the sort of book to take regularly on your travels. The CD will allow you to print out your own working copy or take a laptop with you. If you are having problems printing a copy, and want one printed for you, please contact me at roger@iohk.com . If there are enough people wanting them, I will try and get a low cost (but therefore lower quality) ring bound black and white 'Bronze' edition up and running. It should not take very long.

My other concern was how to update the book with any significant change in views, new data or discussion material. The advances in Information Technology makes that easy: Put the CD folder 2_cd on your hard drive, I will keep all those who purchased a Gold Edition Book updated via E-mail, and you make the necessary amendments direct to your drive. If you have your own ring bound working version, you can then print out and insert the amended pages or extra data. Unfortunately this service is only free of charge for the Gold Edition book owners: those of you who missed out on the Gold Book have to pay $10.00 US per year for updates (address at top of page). Those of you who bought only the CD, have registered and have e-mail can get the updates free of charge for one year. Regular updates will include all the latest Tadayoshi oshigata I see and any new or relevant information coming to light.

The file "Addendum" on the CD has any last minute book amendments. The CD is up to date.

**************** 2. CD-ROM LAYOUT & MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS *************

CD-ROM LAYOUT: The CD is laid out with the following folders (directories) and files:

 0_COPYRT Single copyright document

1_COVER All the original images used in the CD sleeve, book cover together with unused designs.

2_CD This is the heart of the CD-ROM version.Hyperlinked book pages (one page per document).

Includes embedded prints, photos, images and spreadsheets.

3_PRINTS Separate JPEG collection of all prints used in the book.

4_PHOTOS Separate JPEG collection of all photos used in the book.

5_IMAGES Separate JPEG collection of all remaining artwork used.

6_BOOK Book pages without hyperlinks. Two pages per document. See below.

7_MISC A collection of miscellaneous files that you might be able to use (somewhere?).

Addendum.doc Last minute updates to the book itself (CD is updated at time of publication).

Brushsci.ttf True type brushscript font used periodically throughout the book.

Install.bat Simple batch installation file to load entire CD.

Installm.bat Simple batch installation file to load the minimum recommended portion of CD. If these batch files load the data as Read-only files, and you wish to make amendments to the Read-only files, see Section 7.                 WARNING: You must ensure that you have sufficient space on your hard drive before running the installation files.

Read_me.doc The document you are reading now.

Register.doc Registration form (optional but recommended).

Tadaicon.ico Tadayoshi icon for use on your desktop. There is another saved as Tadaicon.bmp in the 7_Misc folder.

Tadyoshi.doc The entrance document to the book. Double clicking this file will bring up the first page providing you have MS Word installed. By clicking on the hyperlinks you can read through the book page by page. Note that some artwork may be slow to load. Please be patient especially if you have a slow computer. If you see a "go right" arrow at the top of the page, the page has completed loading but the text or image is normally out of view (e.g. dedication page vii. with only limited text, centered on the page).

There are no files on the CD that will affect your operating system. The only executable files are the batch files which copy the CD images and documents to your hard drive. The CD does NOT alter any of your operating files. Once you have installed the CD, it is recommended that you create a shortcut on your desktop and also add the Brushscript true type font to your Windows system. The CD does not automatically do this for you, so you will have to do it yourself and instructions are given later.

ADDITIONAL NOTES. The CD contains a lot of data, much of it duplicated and in image form. The heart of the CD is the book portion itself contained in 2_cd. The other main folder is 6_book which contains all the original pages (two pages per file) used by the professional printers to print out the Gold Edition book. It therefore has no hyperlinks. You may wish to consider using the files from 6_book to print out your own copy rather than using the hyperlinked files, because it will print quicker and does not have hyperlink icons on the pages. So double clicking a page in 6_book will actually bring up two pages e.g. clicking 6_book \t017.doc will bring up pages 17 and 18 of the book, whereas for example 2_cd\017.doc will bring up the single hyperlink page 17. It is a long process printing out the whole book, but you would not be able to load and print the entire book all at once unless you have a huge amount of RAM. If you are running an old, low memory computer, you may have problems with some single pages due to high image resolution and therefore large file size. It is worth the time and effort printing out a black and white working copy on your home computer. You can then spill beer and cigar ash all over the book to your hearts content! Also on the CD are the excel files xxx.xls. These are spreadsheets of data and are single pages of work (unlike the double page txxx.doc files). You are more likely to change these in the future than other items. Some spreadsheets are embedded into the documents. You can set up the system to be able to edit these files within MS Word, but I warn you now, those of you used to Excel will find the 'tables' in MS Word relatively user-unfriendly. Blame Bill Gates, not me. If you have a MAC with the necessary Microsoft software installed, the CD should still work but you may have to change the view window layout.

IMAGE IDENTIFICATION The images, photos and prints are indexed by page number, working left to right and top to bottom, with an additional three-letter identifier. Hence photo 112b_nid.jpg is the second (b) photo on page 112, and is of the Nidai's (nid) work.

Also on the CD is the folder 7_misc that contains miscellaneous material used to produce the Gold Edition book. Rather than just discard these images and documents, I have left them on the CD as someone out there may find them useful. This folder also contains a copy of the Brushscript font used in the book. This font does not normally appear in Windows, so if you do not install it, the book layout may be altered when you view certain pages. I also use the "View - Page Layout" from the dropdown menu in MS Word when reading from a computer. Do not get too bogged down in the CD itself … the aim is to quickly install it and read/use the data on Hizen Tadayoshi as required.

The CD will not install everything by itself. You will have to install some components manually (if you choose to optimize the use of the CD) which will take you 10 minutes even if you are a computer "dummy". I recommend that you load the working hyperlink book files (see later, but effectively the folder 2_cd), with a linked icon on your desktop, and keep the remaining data on the CD. You cannot save edited files to the CD-ROM since it is a once only write. You will therefore have to save them to your hard drive or a CD-RW. All will become obvious when you read on. Those of you who are bored reading already, put the CD-ROM in and locate and double click the following file to run directly from the CD without loading data to your hard drive:

                     F:\Tadyoshi\Tadyoshi.doc

To load the entire CD to your C drive, run the Install.bat file on the CD:

F:\Tadyoshi\Install.bat

To load just the hyperlinked book portion of the CD to your C drive, i.e. the minimum files necessary to run from your hard drive, run the Installm.bat file on the CD:

F:\Tadyoshi\Installm.bat

The installation programs will tell you when they are complete. If you need to uninstall the program, drag the folder icon to the trash can in My Computer.

Certain pages in the book were written using a Brushscript font, which you may like to install on your computer. If you choose NOT to install the new font, some pages may be misaligned.

To add the new Brushscript font to your computer

  1. In Windows click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Fonts.
  2. On the File menu, click Install New Font.
  3. Click the drive, and then click the folder 7_Misc that contains the Brushscript font you want to add.
  4. Highlight the Brushscript font you want to add by clicking it (Brushsci.ttf).
  5. Then Ok

MAC USERS 8 character file names are used because the CD is reproduced in ISO9660 format so that it will work on a Macintosh computer. Unfortunately ISO9660 will only display 8 character file names. MAC users may find that the installation programs will not work, and they will have to manually load the CD to their hard drive if so desired. They must also ensure that they have installed MS Word and Excel. Some reformatting of pages may be apparent unless you install the Brushscript font. My apologies but the CD was created for IBM format computers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS I used the following programs to create the book and CD:

            Microsoft Word 97

            Microsoft Excel 97

Windows 98 on an IBM PC (Win 95 running MS Office 97 should also work).

You will need sufficient free hard drive space to load the CD. Alternatively you can run directly from the CD with just a desktop icon, or even without loading anything if you wish. The free hard drive space required is:

Less than 3K for the icon and link (running from CD only).

130 Mb for the 2_CD program (Book using hyperlinks). Minimum installation to run from your hard drive.

403 Mb for the whole CD (entire CD loaded to hard drive. Takes 10 minutes).

You will need at least 32 Mb of memory and a Pentium chip or you will find the load time for some images very long. The higher the RAM and chip speed the quicker the load. The CD is designed to run in the MS Windows environment with MS Word and Excel pre-installed. If you are running high memory programs in the background, I suggest that you close them down (or upgrade your RAM). I used a 166 Pentium with 84 Mb RAM and even the largest page would load within 15 seconds. HINT: Do yourself a favour and defrag your hard drive regularly and upgrade your RAM to the maximum. You may like to consider selling the 286 and that beaten up old Wakizashi to upgrade to a new computer! (Having spent years writing the book on an old computer, I eventually upgraded to a high end computer, and wish I had done it earlier because it would have saved me a considerable amount of time. Full pages now load within a second or two.) You may also require an image viewer to view individual images that are not embedded into the MS Word documents. I used Photoimpact to edit images, and Compupic Ver 4.5 to quickly view many images at once from the print, photo and image folders. These are the xxx.jpg files. As of writing, Compupic 5.0 is now available on the Web for a modest fee. Alternatively you can drag and drop the JPG images into your Internet browser if you do not have a stand alone image viewer. You can still view the CD on lower standard software than that above, but it will not work at the optimum speed and you may overload your computer.

If you have to re-load the CD for some reason, you are warned that the installation batch files could automatically overwrite your own work, although they should not do so. If you have changed any files, you are advised to save them to another directory prior to re-loading the CD.

******************3. GETTING STARTED FOR COMPUTER GEEKS **************

To add the CD to your computer

1. In Windows Add New Programs, locate and execute the file F:\Tadyoshi\Installm.bat (or Install.bat)

2. Create a new shortcut on your Windows desktop. Target C:\Tadyoshi\Tadyoshi.doc

3. Change the desktop icon to C:\Tadyoshi\Tadaicon.ico

4. In Windows Control Panel, Fonts, File menu, Install New Font, install the Brushsci.ttf from your C drive or from the folder 7_Misc either on the CD or your hard drive.

That's it, you are ready to go.

You are basically copying the folder 2_cd and all its contents to your hard drive into a new folder named C:\Tadyoshi using the simple batch files. If your drive letters are different, edit the batch file using notepad and save to your hard drive or a floppy. If you want the whole CD loaded, use Install.bat, otherwise use Installm.bat.

**************4. GETTING STARTED FOR DUMMIES (i.e. Most of us)**************

OK, seems a bit daunting at first, but you are only going to copy the CD files onto your hard drive, set up an icon (little picture) on the desktop to run the book, and add a new font to windows. You might even learn something new in the process. All you then have to do to use the book is double click the icon Mr. Tadyoshi on your desktop. Easy! If you do not wish to load the files on your hard drive, but would rather run the CD by itself (i.e. not enough hard drive free space) go to the section on To run the program from the CD-ROM drive only. Let me assume that you want to load the minimum files on your hard drive and be able to save changes there as well (got to start somewhere!). So here is how to do it:

To load the CD to your computer

1. Insert the CD into your drive (picture up, shiny side face down!).

2. In Windows click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add New Programs.

3. Select Install.

4. Select Next.

5. Select Browse.

6. Locate and double click the file F:\Tadyoshi\Installm.bat (for minimum files, or double click Install.bat for the entire CD). You will probably have to go up a few levels to find your CD-ROM drive.

The files will automatically load to your hard drive in a new folder called Tadyoshi.

7. Once finished (up to 10 minutes) close all the open windows.

To add the new Brushscript font to your computer

1. In Windows click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Fonts.

2. On the File drop down menu, click Install New Font.

3. Click the C:\ Tadyoshi drive, and then click the folder 7_Misc that contains the Brushscript font you want to add. If you are running directly from the CD-ROM, install the new font from the CD (found in the F:\Tadyoshi\7_Misc\ folder).

4. Highlight the Brushscript font you want to add by clicking it (Brush Script MT Italic (True Type)).

5. Then Ok

To set up a Windows desktop icon (recommended).

1. Right click a free space on the desktop and you will see a box.

2. Place the mouse over New and hold it there for a few seconds

3. Select Shortcut, Browse, Files of type, and All files.

4. Locate the folder Tadyoshi on your C:\ drive and double click it.

6. Select the file Tadyoshi.doc and double click it.

7. Select Next.

8. Type in a name e.g. HIZEN TADAYOSHI or accept the default name.

9. Finish

You should now have an icon that will run the program, but doesn't look correct, so we will change the way it looks even though it will still work:

To change the Windows desktop icon to Mr. Tadayoshi (recommended).

1. Place the mouse over the new icon and right click once.

2. Select Properties, Shortcut tab, Change Icon.

3. Select Browse.

4. Arrow up until you find your hard drive "C" (the 'look in' window)

5. Select the folder Tadyoshi and double click it.

6. Select the icon picture Tadaicon.ico and double click it.

7. Select Ok, Ok.

To run the program from your hard drive (once installed on your hard drive)

1. Double click the Mr. Tadayoshi icon.

To run the program from the CD-ROM drive only

1. Insert the CD ROM (do not load the files onto your hard drive)

2. Start, Run.

3. Type F:\Tadyoshi\Tadyoshi.doc and Ok (where F:\ is your CD-ROM drive letter).

You can of course set up an icon on the desktop to run from just the CD-ROM. Start from To set up a Windows desktop icon detailed above, but instead of targeting your hard drive C when looking for the target file, target the CD-ROM drive (usually F). You will also have to save the icon on the CD to your hard drive. You can also run directly from 'my computer' or any file manager by double clicking any main book document on the CD-ROM drive.

To uninstall the program

In my computer, drag the folder C:\Tadyoshi to over the top of the trashcan.

TESTING Place your mouse icon over the following blue letters and hold it there (do NOT click it yet):

                                                                 Tadyoshi.doc

If you get a file name and folder, then this is what your computer will search for. If you do not get additional information, you are running fairly old software and should upgrade. Now double click it and you should enter the book if it is installed on your hard drive C. If it doesn't work, you have not installed/loaded the CD-ROM correctly. Try copying the files again to your hard drive in the folder named C:\Tadyoshi and if it still doesn't work, try another drive letter.

If you haven't installed the files, double click the following to run the program directly from the CD (assuming your CD-ROM drive is drive F):

CD-ROM drive F                                      Tadyoshi.doc

If you are having major problems, the answer is simple: Call a friend who knows what he is doing. Get him to copy the CD files to your hard drive and run Tadyoshi.doc. Still having problems, I am afraid that you are computer illiterate and /or need a better machine and the CD is not for you (sorry no refund as I know it works even on my antiquated machine).

************************ 5. NAVIGATING THE BOOK **********************************

You can use the icon on your desktop (targets the Tadyoshi.doc file, which opens MS Word in the folder 2_cd i.e. the hyperlink book) and then use the hyperlinks to navigate the book through consecutive pages.

The circled hyperlinked icon "?" will always take you to the 'Contents' page 2, where more hidden text hyperlinks will take you to the correct chapter. Use the page forward (normally bottom right of each page) or page backward (top left) to go through the book. Note that page 1. in the hyperlink book has hyperlinks to individual chapters on each Tadayoshi master. Some spreadsheets also have hyperlinks. You can also double click directly on one of the files using my computer or another file manager to access data and images.

*****************************6. PRINTING*************************************************

You can print each open page individually using the MS Word drop down menu. Ensure that your printer settings are correct and you are using A4 paper. You may also try printing in the "Open file" part of MS Word by selecting multiple files and right clicking. In the box that subsequently appears, select "Print". See also previous section '2. CD-ROM layout & minimum requirements'.

***********************7. EDITING READ-ONLY PAGES *******************************

The simple install files may save the data as "Read-only" files on your computer. If you want to make amendments to pages but find they are Read-only, you will have to first have to change the individual file properties as follows:

To edit pages that are Read-only

1. In My Computer, open the appropriate folder (e.g. C:\Tadyoshi) and double click it.

2. Open the appropriate folder (e.g. 2_CD) by double clicking it.

3. Select all the appropriate files that you wish to edit. There are several ways of doing this:

a. In the folder window, hold down the CTRL key, and then click each item you want.

b. To select all the files and folders in the window, on the Edit menu, click Select All if available.

c. To select a group of files that are next to each other, click in a blank area of the window next to the first or last file in the group. Then drag around the files you want to select.

4. Right click the highlighted files. Select Properties.

5. Disable the Read-only ticked box.

6. Exit all windows.

The files are no longer Read-only and may be edited when they appear on your screen whilst reading the book.WARNING: If you edit a page on your computer and exit the program, Windows will ask if you wish to save the page. Select No unless you have intentionally changed it.

*********************************************************************************************************

I hope that you enjoy the book. If you do, please recommend it to a friend and also take the time to complete the registration sheet found in the file Tadyoshi\register.doc. I thoroughly recommend that you print out a hard copy.

Other than that, please use the CD as it is relatively impervious to wear. The book isn't!

Yours sincerely,

Roger J Robertshaw
